oratorical contest

The official topic for 2008 is "Why Me?  Why Not?"

First conducted in 1928, the Optimist Oratorical Contest is one of the most popular programs for Optimist Clubs.   More than $150,000 in scholarships are given annually to winners of district oratorical contests.  The competition is open to students under the age of 16 as of December 31, 2007.  There is no minimum age.  The Optimist Oratorical Contest is conducted at the club, zone, regional and district level concluding with the District Finals at the 3rd Quarter meeting on May 10, 2008. The South Texas District conducts separate contests for boys and girls.

Local clubs will award medallions and may give other awards.  Zone, Regional and District winners will receive a plaque. Participation certificates are awarded at all levels.  The winning boy and winning girl at the District contest will each receive a $1,500 scholarship. 

This year's Oratorical Topic/Theme is "Why me?  Why not?"  Third Quarter South Texas District's convention will be held from 5/9/08 to 5/11/08.  The Oratorical Champion Competition will be held on Saturday 5/10.  All Regional Competitions should be held on or before 4/26/08.  All Zone's contests should be held on or before 4/12/08.  All Club Contests should be held on or before 3/29/08.  $1500 Scholarships will be given to the boy & girl winners.  Clubs can  also award $500 scholarships to their individual winners. There will be Four Regional Competitions held this year (if necessary).  Region I - Zones 1-6, Region II - Zones 7-10, Region III - 11-13, Region IV - Zones 14-18.
